The unwillingness of many left-leaning academics to follow through on the political implications of their work is probably due in large part to some combination of the slack academic labor market and the general lack of opportunities for left intellectual production outside of academia that could relieve the pressure for left-leaning researchers to discipline themselves according to the demands of the market (think of the role of think tanks in fostering rightwing intellectual production).
